Molly Ivins writes about Texas politics and other bizarre happenings.

UC Santa Cruz Arts & Lectures welcomes one of the nation’s wittiest and best-known political pundits, Molly Ivins, to the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium on Sunday, March 26 at 8:00pm. Ivins’ no-holds-barred opinions shed light on the grave importance, and the entertaining potentials, of the last presidential election, as well as on topics ranging from religious fundamentalism to the value of laughter in dealing with politics.

LECTURE
Ivins’ most recent book, Shrub: The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush,
was released in 2000 and will be the springboard for her Santa Cruz lecture. About the presidential candidate from her home state she says, "If you think his daddy had trouble with 'the vision thing,' wait till you meet this one."

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
"Politics is great entertainment—better than the zoo, better than the circus, rougher than football, and even more aesthetically satisfying than baseball." So says Molly Ivins, best-selling author and widely syndicated political columnist for the Fort Worth Star Telegram. A three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, Ivins writes about press issues for the American Civil Liberties Union and is active in Amnesty International’s Journalism Network. She is author of the best selling Molly Ivins Can’t Say That, Can She?, a collection of essays on politics and journalism, as well as her 1993 Nothin’ But Good Times, You Got to Dance With Them What Brung You: Politics In the Clinton Years, published in 1998, and her latest, Shrub: The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush. From the psychology of the entertainment industry to her experience as a young woman in the days when journalism was dominated by "good old boys sitting around drinking Cutty Sark out of coffee cups" and women were relegated to covering "food, fluff and fashion," Ivins’ point of view is fearless, humorous and informative. Born and raised in Houston, Ivins earned her B.A. from Smith College and her masters degree in journalism from Columbia University. Ivins counts that the Minneapolis police force named its mascot pig after her and that she was once banned from the Campus of Texas A&M as her two greatest honors.
