February 2, 2001 To: THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY From: Chancellor Greenwood Re: Disaster averted at De Anza College provides opportunity to review campus safety policies and procedures Dear Colleagues: With me, I am sure that most of you have been following the news of a potential human disaster at De Anza College, one of our partners in the Community College Dual Admissions program and a close neighbor to the Cupertino office of UCSC Extension and the Silicon Valley Center. We all owe a debt of thanks to the courageous and responsible young woman, Kelly Bennett, who had the presence of mind to notify authorities, thus preventing what could have been a horrific tragedy. Please join me in publicly thanking Kelly Bennett, and in expressing our relief to our colleagues at De Anza that this disaster has been averted. This shocking event serves to remind us all how fragile our society can be. Although I hope this campus never faces such a terrible situation, I would be remiss if I did not remind us that occasionally there are those among us with the potential to act out violently. I urge all of you to report appropriately any indication that an individual could be prone toward violence or has acquired weapons or other means of destruction. Please refer to our campus Workplace Violence Policy and Procedures for guidance (http://www2.ucsc.edu/comp/policies/violence.htm). This is not a time for undue alarm, but it is an excellent opportunity to be alert, to renew attention to potential violence--and, if there is reasonable cause, to take appropriate action to prevent violence. Although we all hope it will never be necessary, let me also remind us that if we have to evacuate our campus, we must do it quickly and efficiently. If such an emergency occurs for any reason, I will call on every member of the campus to cooperate with emergency personnel to ensure an evacuation that is as safe as possible. Knowing that emergencies can occur at any time, I urge each of you to prepare now, beginning with a review of the campus Emergency Response Plan (http://ehs.ucsc.edu/emplan/index.html), and your unit's emergency plan.
