Making the News

An article in the Monterey County Herald on the burgeoning market for live fish featured Jim Smiley, manager of UCSC's Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve, who has been working with fishermen to gather data from their catches.

A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan to remove the peregrine falcon from the endangered species list led to many stories in both print and broadcast media about the work of UCSC's Predatory Bird Research Group. Coordinator Brian Walton and program manager Glenn Stewart were interviewed on TV stations KSBW (Channel 8), KION (Channel 46), and KRON (Channel 4, San Francisco). Articles featuring Walton and Stewart appeared in many newspapers, including the Santa Cruz County Sentinel, Sacramento Bee, San Francisco Chronicle, and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Another researcher in the Predatory Bird Research Group, Grainger Hunt, was quoted in the Tracy Press in an article about the impact of windmills on hawks and eagles.

Professor of biology Daniel Costa was quoted in articles about the ATOC (Acoustic Thermometry of Ocean Climate) experiment in the San Francisco Chronicle and the Santa Cruz County Sentinel.

A widely published Associated Press article about drownings at San Francisco's Ocean Beach included comments from marine geologist Gary Griggs, director of the Institute of Marine Sciences.

An article in the San Francisco Chronicle about astronomers' search for the cosmic "dark matter" discussed the work of physicist Joel Primack.
