UCSC's commencement ceremonies begin Friday, June 11
UCSC's class of 1999 will hold commencement exercises on Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday, June 11-13. This year, the following numbers of students are

candidates for degrees: 1683, bachelor of arts, music, or science degrees; 138, master's
degrees; and 56, doctorate degrees. A small number of UCSC students will
receive graduate certificates.
Each of UCSC's eight residential colleges holds its own commencement
ceremony at various campus locations. In addition, the Jack Baskin School
of Engineering will hold its graduation celebration on the Performing Arts Mainstage. The schedule is as follows:
Friday, June 11
- The Division of Graduate Studies commencement ceremonies will
be held at 5 p.m. on the East Field. The keynote speaker will be former
astronaut--the first American woman to walk in space--and UCSC alumna Kathryn

Saturday, June 12
- The Merrill College commencement ceremonies will be held at
10 a.m. on the East Field. The keynote speaker will be professor of anthropology
emeritus Stuart Schlegel. Free. Call 459-5534.
- The Benjamin F. Porter College commencement ceremonies will
be held at 10 a.m. on the Porter Quadrangle. The keynote speaker will be
screenwriter and actor Harold Ramis. Free. Call 459-2857.
- The Cowell College commencement ceremonies will be held at 2
p.m. in the Cowell Courtyard. Free. The keynote speaker will be professor
of English literature Michael Warren. Call 459-2255.
- The College Eight commencement ceremonies will be held at 5
p.m. on the College Eight Plaza. The keynote speaker will be professor

- The Kresge College commencement ceremonies will be held at 5
p.m. on the East Field. The keynote speaker will be associate professor

Sunday, June 13
- The Crown College commencement ceremonies will be held at 9:30
a.m. on the East Field. The keynote speaker will be Crown '73 alumnus Rick
Simpson, now a staff member for Gov. Gray Davis. Free. Call 459-2101.
- The Oakes College commencement ceremonies will be held at 11
a.m. on the Oakes Field. The keynote speaker will be noted Mexican-American
author Victor Villasenor, author of Rain of Gold. Free. Call 459-2550.
- The Stevenson College commencement ceremonies will be held at
1 p.m. on the East Field. Co-keynote speakers will be professor of women's
studies and history Bettina Aptheker and professor of psychology Craig

- The Jack Baskin School of Engineering commencement celebration
will be held at 2 p.m. on the Performing Arts Mainstage. The keynote speaker will
be David Hitz, vice president and founder of Network Appliance, an electronics
