Anthropologist Adrienne Zihlman was mentioned in Time magazine's recent cover story, "The Truth About Women's Bodies." Zihlman and the late Nancy Tanner got the nod for their alternative to the "old, male-centered theory of human evolution."

Susanne Jonas of Latin American and Latino studies continues her impressive run of op-eds, publishing one in the San Francisco Chronicle about the INS decision to resume deportations of Salvadorans and Guatemalans.

When Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra came to town recently, they sold out the Civic Auditorium for their centennial tribute to the late great jazz king Duke Ellington. The visit, which was presented by Arts & Lectures, was covered with a striking photo in the Santa Cruz County Sentinel.

English professor Murray Baumgarten and humanities dean Jorge Hankamer were quoted in articles announcing a $1.5 million gift to the university for its Jewish studies program. The story was covered in the San Jose Mercury News, the Sentinel, and San Francisco's Jewish Bulletin.

For L.A. Parent Magazine, psychology's Campbell Leaper weighed in on the pros and cons of software for youngsters under the age of one. When used with an adult or older child, such software could offer some pluses for cognitive development, but it has less value in the area of language development, he said.

Manuel Pastor of Latin American and Latino studies was quoted in an Oakland Post story about a Berkeley-based project that is providing teens with training and jobs in computer technology. Pastor noted the "ethnic and occupational segregation" in the technology field.

In a story in the San Jose Mercury News, Ellen Moir, director of the New Teacher Center, praised San Jose mayor Ron Gonzales's proposal to provide scholarships for students who enter teacher training programs. Moir praised the city's involvement in the effort to help aspiring teachers pay off their student loans.
