Registrar schedules meetings to discuss new grading procedures
Beginning this quarter, new UCSC undergraduates can accumulate a GPA, and all students may request letter grades in almost every class. To help members of the campus community understand the new grading procedures, four informational sessions have been scheduled.

Small-scale medical trials on cancer patients provide hope that gene therapy could become a potent weapon in the fight against certain ovarian cancers and breast cancers, a UCSC audience learned recently.

Packard Foundation awards fellowship to UCSC astronomer
For the fourth consecutive year, a UCSC researcher has captured one of the nation's most prestigious honors for young faculty members: a David and Lucile Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering. Astronomer Dennis Zaritsky, age 33, will receive $100,000 per year for the next five years to support his research.

UCSC brings Student Communications Services online for 2,000 students
More than 2,000 students who moved into Merrill, Cowell, Stevenson, and Crown Colleges, and Crown/Merrill Apartments this fall found in their rooms new connections to the campus network and the Internet and new telephone service.

Grants bolster ambitious plans for Latin American and Latino studies
In his first year as chair of Latin American and Latino studies, Manuel Pastor and his colleagues in both his program and the Chicano-Latino Research Center brought in more major grant support than they had hoped to generate in three years.
