Dr. Ernest A. Ball, in this 1982 photo, examined a redwood "plantlet" cloned in his Applied Sciences laboratory. Regarded as a pioneer in plant tissue culture research, Dr. Ball was affiliated with UCSC in the late stages of his long career in botany.
