Archaeologist Judith Habicht-Mauche and geochemist Russell Flegal teamed up recently to investigate the sources of lead used in the glazes of 15th-century pottery shards. Their findings have shed new light on the activities of early Native Americans. Habicht-Mauche and Flegal are pictured in the lab in Earth and Marine Sciences where a technique called ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) was used to determine the lead isotope ratios of each sample.
