$5 million gift launches UCSC's new School
of Engineering
UCSC has received
a $5 million gift, the
largest in campus history, from
philanthropist Jack Baskin to
launch its new
School of Engineering. At a news conference in San Jose on
Friday, May 16, Chancellor Greenwood and other campus officials announced
the gift and provided details regarding the professional school, endorsed a day
earlier by UC

Chancellor Greenwood
will be inaugurated on Friday, May 23
In a traditional academic ceremony, M.R.C. Greenwood will be inaugurated
as the seventh chancellor of UCSC on the afternoon of
Friday, May 23. Open to the public, the inauguration will begin
at 12:30 p.m. in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater.
Grad students protest
Several dozen graduate student employees picketed at both campus
entrances during a two-day labor walkout on
May 14-15. A fact sheet on
graduate student unionization, the issue prompting the walkout, was
prepared by the administration.
