$5 million gift launches UCSC's new School of Engineering
UCSC has received a $5 million gift, the largest in campus history, from philanthropist Jack Baskin to launch its new School of Engineering. At a news conference in San Jose on Friday, May 16, Chancellor Greenwood and other campus officials announced the gift and provided details regarding the professional school, endorsed a day earlier by UC Regents. (More photos of the press conference, a fact sheet, and comments about the new engineering school.)

Chancellor Greenwood will be inaugurated on Friday, May 23
In a traditional academic ceremony, M.R.C. Greenwood will be inaugurated as the seventh chancellor of UCSC on the afternoon of Friday, May 23. Open to the public, the inauguration will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater.

Grad students protest
Several dozen graduate student employees picketed at both campus entrances during a two-day labor walkout on May 14-15. A fact sheet on graduate student unionization, the issue prompting the walkout, was prepared by the administration.
