Awards and honors

Donald Potts, professor of biology, was elected to the rank of AAAS Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. This year, the AAAS Council elected 283 new fellows nationwide whose "efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished." Potts was honored for his significant contributions to the ecological and evolutionary understanding of corals and reefs, to the development of marine biodiversity programs, and to international education. Potts received a fellowship certificate and rosette on February 15 at the AAAS annual meeting in Seattle.

Phillip Crews, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, was selected to serve as a member of the Bio-organic & Natural Products Chemistry Study Section at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Division of Research Grants. Prominent researchers are invited to join study sections based on their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific disciplines, as evidenced by the quality of their research, publications, and other activities. Crews and his colleagues on the study section will review grant applications submitted to NIH, make recommendations on these applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their field. Crews's term will run through June 2000.
