UCSC tsunami-related events, including relief activities

'Bay Area Unites' Benefit:
Trustees from the UCSC Foundation, including Vice President Anu Luther, Talat and Kamil Hasan, and Kiran Malhotra, were involved in planning a major tsunami relief event, Bay Area Unites, that featured acclaimed author Deepak Chopra, Grammy-nominated Lisa Loeb, and a taped appearance from former President Bill Clinton. The event, cosponsored by UCSC, took place February 20 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose and raised more than $1.5 million for relief efforts.

Indonesian Benefit:
On February 12, a benefit for the tsunami relief effort in Indonesia took place in UCSC's Second Stage venue. [Currents Online article]


College-based activities:

Cowell College
Cowell is hosting a "World's Dinner College Night" on March 4 that will have a tie-in to tsunami relief efforts. Cowell Senate has endorsed an SUA appeal from CalPIRG for a "Skip-A-Meal" effort that will benefit tsunami relief.

Stevenson College
Stevenson just hosted its Tsunami Relief College Night and raised $310; Tsunami Aid display case at the college includes websites that people can go to in order to contribute money.

Colleges Nine & Ten
A donation box collected approximately $100 at a recent College Night; continuing to accept donations in the Activities Office.

Kresge College
During the week of January 24, the Kresge Multicultural Education Committee and the Kresge Cares Organization staffed tables at Kresge to collect donations for the American Red Cross; during same week, organizations conducted a bake goods drive benefiting the Red Cross; a "community assistant" is organizing a concert for March 11 with proceeds going to the Red Cross.

Porter College
A candlelight vigil took place on January 14.

College Eight
Organizing a semi-formal dance called "Winter's Hottest Night" on Friday, Feb. 11, at the College Eight Dining Hall. $3/person, with all proceeds going to Tsunami relief.

Oakes College
Oakes "Reslife" hosted a dance/fundraiser on Jan. 21; more than $700 was raised.


One-Month Anniversary Event:
The Chancellor's Office and Division of Student Affairs invited all members of the campus community to take part in a memorial on January 26—the one-month anniversary of the devastating tsunami that struck South Asia. See slide show (.mov file) of event.
