Alumni Notes: Alumni Association raises over $100,000 for scholarships

It seemed like an ambitious goal at the time: raising $60,000 in three years to endow a scholarship program. When the UCSC Alumni Council established the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund endowment in 1991, "it was a new direction for the association. We weren't sure how our alumni would respond," says Steve Jung, chair of the council's Development Committee.

Today, Jung says he is thrilled that the association raised $100,000, exceeding his committee's goal by $40,000. "Alumni care about rising UC fees," says Jung. "Many of us--including those who are now repaying student loans--feel it's our obligation to make the UCSC experience accessible to all students, regardless of their financial status."

The scholarship fund has provided $25,000 to twenty UCSC students since 1991.

The association's new goal is to raise $200,000 by June 1996. Contributions, payable to the UCSC Foundation-Alumni Scholarships, will be gratefully accepted by University Advancement at the Carriage House, UCSC, Santa Cruz 95064.
