Pister honored with Berkeley Medal

In May, when he was awarded the Berkeley Medal, Chancellor Pister joined such distinguished company as the Dalai Lama, former United Nations Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar, Philippine president Corazon Aquino, the late French President Francois Mitterand, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

The Berkeley Medal is the highest honor conferred by UC Berkeley. The medal is awarded for superior achievement in the public interest and is generally reserved for heads of state. Including Pister, 26 people have been recognized for their outstanding service since the medal was first presented in 1981.

In awarding the medal to Chancellor Pister, UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor and Provost Carol Christ praised his "remarkable career in service to engineering, education, and generations of young scholars."
