New facilities for a new era of research

Research at UCSC entered a new era seven years ago with the construction of Sinsheimer Laboratories, the first of a second generation of research buildings. Since then, five other major new facilities have been built, providing advanced and specialized spaces for natural sciences, social sciences, and the arts.

Robert L. Sinsheimer Laboratories Completed: Fall 1989 Cost: $21.3 million Size: 98,000 square feet Features: Offices and laboratories for researchers in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology; microbiology; immunology;neurobiology; and biochemistry.

Science Library Completed: Spring 1991 Cost: $13.7 million Size: 75,000 square feet Features: Equipped with the latest technology for electronically retrieving bibliographic data. An award-winning building that provides a large, fully staffed data-access room equipped with about twenty workstations.

Earth and Marine Sciences Completed: Spring 1994 Cost: $36 million Size: 149,000 square feet Features: An award-winning facility that houses offices and labs for researchers in earth sciences, ocean sciences, the Institute of Tectonics, and the Institute of Marine Sciences. Specialized facilities include the W. M. Keck Seismological Laboratory, the W. M. Keck High-Intensity X-Ray Facility, and the Microscopy and Imaging Laboratory.

Social Sciences 1 Completed: Spring 1994 Cost: $9.9 million Size: 56,000 square feet Features: Home of the division offices and the Anthropology and Economics Boards of Studies. Provides computing facilities and the Economics Resource Room. Contains one of the best-equipped undergraduate anthropology labs in the nation as well as fully equipped research and teaching labs, including a dissection lab and forensics lab.

Social Sciences 2 Completed: Fall 1995 Cost: $14.2 million Size: 75,000 square feet Features: Home of the Board of Studies in Psychology, the Bilingual Research Center, and the national Center for Research on Education, Diversity, and Excellence. Includes a computer laboratory and specialized research space for social psychology and child- development faculty.

Music Center Completed: Fall 1996 (Phase 1) Cost: $12.3 million Size: 19,000 square feet Features: Phase 1 includes a 400-seat recital hall, rehearsal space, recording studios, instructional laboratories, teaching studios, and practice rooms. Phase 2 will include a gamelan room, electronic music studios, faculty office-studios, Music Department offices, and support space.
