UCSC Review Summer 1996

New alumni career services offered

What if finding a new job was as easy as surfing the World Wide Web? Thanks to a new program available through the Career, Internship and Student Employment Center (CISEC), it can be. UC's nine campuses have banded together to join Job Track, a nationwide listing of employment opportunities on the Internet for UC alumni and students. For a fee, alumni can take advantage of the service, which allows them to look for jobs from the comfort and privacy of their own homes.

Job Track is one of several CISEC programs that are of particular interest to alumni. Another is the Career Advice Network (CAN). Through CAN, alumni offer themselves as career mentors for students and other alumni. Mentors' involvement can be as limited as a single telephone consultation or as in-depth as "job shadowing," which allows a job seeker to observe the mentor on the job for half a day. About 750 UCSC alumni are currently signed up nationally as CAN mentors.

"Alumni have special insight into the job market," says Barbara Bedford, CISEC's director. "It's difficult for students to get a good start in today's job market. Alumni support through programs like CAN make all the difference."
