UCSC Review Summer-Fall 1994 Alumni News

UCSC's best and brightest

Who was your most memorable professor at UCSC? If you're like most UCSC alumni, this question evokes memories of one or two people whose passion for teaching sets them apart from the rest. Here's your chance to give something back to a professor who gave so much to you: submit a nomination for the 1994 Distinguished Teaching Award.

And while you're thinking about your favorite professors, consider your alumni friends. Would any of them be candidates for the Alumni Achievement Award? This honor is bestowed annually to an alumnus or alumna of UC Santa Cruz whose personal achievement has brought distinction to the university. Among the ten past recipients are ABC-TV South Africa bureau chief Richard Sergay; Kathryn Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space; and state senator Art Torres.

Alumni Association supports scholarship recipients

UCSC's Class of '74 celebrated the twenty-year anniversary of their graduation and made fund-raising history by becoming the first UCSC graduating class to make a scholarship gift to the campus. Class members raised more than $18,000 for the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund prior to their April reunion.

The groundswell of support for financially needy UCSC students reached far beyond the campus as Alumni Association chapters in Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, and New York donated $3,900 to the fund in 1993-94. Members of the Alumni Association Council and other association members raised an additional $55,800. In all, more than $77,000 was raised for scholarships, making 1993-94 the best year ever for Alumni Association scholarship support.

AAUC Legislative Conference

Last spring,UC alumni met with legislators to discuss issues of importance to UC as part of the Alumni Associations of the University of California (AAUC) Legislative Conference in Sacramento. Five UCSC undergraduates received Alumni Association scholarships in 1993-94. Scholarships of $500 per quarter were awarded to Yolanda Montes, a senior community studies major at Cowell; Shawn Tillis, a College Eight economics major who graduated in December 1993; Rosita Lemus, a sophomore psychology major at Oakes; and Clarence Robertson, a senior modern literary studies major at Cowell; and Carolyn Lowry, a senior earth sciences major at College Eight.

Reunion planned for gay alumni

A core group of ten UCSC graduates is already hard at work planning a reunion of lesbian, gay, and bisexual UCSC alumni, tentatively scheduled for April 1995. Linda Hooper (College Eight '84), a member of the campus Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Concerns Committee (LGBCC), has high hopes for the event, the first of its kind at UCSC. "In the 28 years since UCSC was founded, the culture of lesbian, gay, and bisexual people has changed completely. This will be a chance for gay alumni from several generations to share their experiences and talk about ways to support programs at UCSC."

The group's first task is to locate alumni who would like to attend the reunion or explore the possibility of forming a permanent affinity group within the UCSC Alumni Association. Interested alumni are encouraged to call the Alumni Office at (800) 933-SLUG or write the UCSC Alumni Office, attn: LGBCC, at the Carriage House, UCSC, Santa Cruz, CA 95064.
