Chancellor's Message

Dear Friends of UC Santa Cruz,

I hope you are enjoying the changing of the seasons—at last, there's a chill in the air. This is the perfect time for me to thank you for your support of UC Santa Cruz and to share my excitement about UCSC's first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign.

We launched the public phase of The Campaign for UC Santa Cruz in October with a lunch celebration on the lawn outside University House. That sweeping view of lower campus and the Monterey Bay always inspires, and it was a delight to announce that we are more than halfway to our goal of raising $300 million for the people, programs, and facilities that make UCSC unique.

I'm so grateful for your participation, your vision, and your enthusiasm. With your help, this campaign will enhance the experience of undergraduates, the quality of every academic division, and signature initiatives in genomics, coastal sustainability, data science, and the arts and sciences. We are raising support for undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships, as well as endowments for academic programs and faculty positions. And won't it be a great day when we can reopen our beloved Quarry Amphitheater?

The holiday season is upon us, and big things are on the horizon. In partnership with you, I'm confident we will achieve our goals. As we give thanks, I am more grateful than ever for your support. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Search anywhere and you won't find anything quite like UCSC's International Playhouse, an annual program of short theater pieces staged in different languages by students in the university's Language Program.

Linda Peterson: Why do I give to UC Santa Cruz?

Why do I give to UC Santa Cruz?

Because when I was a student here, I was inspired by a Community Studies project that made me reach outside myself and become involved in the community. UCSC laid the groundwork for the person I've become today.

William Hancock: Quarry glory

Quarry glory

While giving his college-bound daughter a tour of UC Santa Cruz last fall, William Hancock (Cowell ,'79, environmental planning) wanted to show her the Quarry Amphitheater, once known as a great place to attend a lecture, take in a concert, or—during off-hours— sit quietly with a good book.

John Jordan: Tale of generosities

Tale of generosities

Trude Hoffacker will never forget the year she was feeling down and the Dickens Universe conference boosted her spirits. "I said to a friend, let's go to this conference," she said. "Dickens always makes me laugh, and I need a laugh."

Protecting the land. Preserving a legacy

As a teacher, Kenneth Norris was legendary for his ability to inspire students. He taught the popular "Field Quarter" class in UCSC's environmental studies program, a wide-ranging and rigorous course in the natural history of California.

Anne Bourdet: Lending a hand by lending books

Lending a hand by lending books

Anne Bourdet Hagata always made sure her grandchildren had all the books they needed to thrive in college—an impressive feat considering her background.
