MEDIA ADVISORY--FOR IMMEDIATE USE

SANTA CRUZ, CA--In conjunction with graduation, several colleges at the University of California, Santa Cruz, are honoring "inspirational K-12 teachers" nominated by graduating seniors. The following advisory details how participating colleges are recognizing teachers who inspired their students to pursue a university education.

Crown College: Crown College is honoring Gary Cramton, a teacher at The Ark School in Santa Cruz, who was nominated by Franklin Williams, a Crown graduating senior. Franklin is a re-entry student who was greatly influenced by Cramton through the Youths Experiencing Success (YES) program. Cramton will attend the Crown graduation at 10 a.m. in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater on Sunday, June 16, where he will be publicly recognized.

Kresge College: Kresge College invited all graduating seniors to write essays about their most inspirational K-12 teacher; the essay by Mara Mills was selected. Mills nominated David LeCount, who taught her at Menlo-Atherton High School. LeCount will attend the Kresge graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 15, at 5 p.m. in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater. Mills will read her essay, and LeCount will receive a $100 check.

Oakes College: Following a tradition begun several years ago, Oakes College graduates nominated their favorite K-12 teacher for recognition, and the college provost has sent letters to the teachers, including the student's tributes. Copies of both were also sent to the school principal and superintendent. This year, for the first time, teachers' names will be listed in the commencement program.

Porter College: Porter College invited the top college service award recipients to write an essay about their favorite K-12 teacher; the essay that was selected was written by Porter College Student of the Year Sandra Tanamugsukbovon, who nominated Stephen Granucci. Granucci, who teaches at Lowell High School in San Francisco, will attend graduation at 1 p.m. in the Porter quadrangle on Saturday, June 15, and will receive a certificate and public acknowledgment.

Cowell College: Cowell College hosted an essay contest for graduating seniors to write about the K-12 teacher who most influenced them; two winning students won a cash prize. The winners will be noted in the graduation commencement program, and Cowell Provost Carol Freeman is writing congratulatory letters to the teachers.
