Re: One-day strike by TAs

Regarding negotiations on a labor contract with teaching assistants, the University and the UAW met into the night yesterday, though they did not reach final agreement. The parties did agree to extend the mediation for a third time, and the mediation will continue today.

Nevertheless, as you may already know, TAs are picketing today at the main entrance of UCSC's campus, in what has been described as a one-day strike. There had been some hint that this might occur, but the administration was prevented from providing a general alert, due to the moratorium on public communication that both the UAW and the University agreed to as an integral part of the current mediation.

Because of the picketing at the main entrance, the campus can expect to experience some inconveniences, such as reduced bus service and delayed deliveries. To mitigate the impact, additional shuttles are in place to transport Metro bus riders who are being left off at the base of campus.

During this strike, all faculty, staff, and student employees are expected to meet their normal obligations to the university. This includes holding classes at their assigned times and locations. All offices remain open, and it is our responsibility to ensure that a strike by some members of our campus community does not prevent other members from conducting business.

We have a responsibility to students, their parents, and to the citizens who support this institution to sustain its instructional mission. Moreover, The Regents of the University of California have issued unequivocal policies delineating work responsibilities under such circumstances.

More background on the TA labor discussion, plus information on logistical details, including the strike's possible impact on transportation and deliveries to the campus, can be found on the following Web site:
