Re: SCO Forum

Dear Campus Community:

The Jack Baskin School of Engineering is the campus sponsor for this year's SCO Forum, "The New Millennium Now!" The Forum, currently celebrating its thirteenth year, is a conference that brings to our campus several thousand software, engineering and industry leaders from all levels of the server business. The SCO Forum opens on Sunday, August 15, and closes on Friday, August 20, 1999.

SCO is an international company with headquarters in Santa Cruz. During their brief stay, the forum participants use numerous campus facilities: classrooms, dining halls, coffee shops, OPERS, parking lots and campus housing. SCO has returned to UCSC for this prestigious event because of our beautiful location and campus amenities. This conference provides a unique opportunity for professionals to attend cutting edge tutorials, see new technology, make new business contacts, and to take part in informal discussions with UCSC faculty and students.

To help minimize the forum's impact on your activities, the SCO Forum event schedule is listed below. I hope that you will be able to arrange your schedules so that you can avoid those locations, and thereby not experience unnecessary and frustrating delays in your daily activities on campus. The Conference and Summer Housing Office will have signs indicating where to park and how to access Stevenson and Cowell Colleges. The School of Engineering has set up an e-mail address for you to send your questions and comments. We will do our best to respond to your inquiries and concerns. Please contact us at scoforum-questions-comments@cse.ucsc.edu.

SCO Forum Schedule:

August 11-13 Conference setup--parking lot #108 for setup at Stevenson and Cowell Colleges.

August 14-19 Participant registration in the Cowell Conference Room

August 14-20 Conference participants check in at Crown/Merrill, Kresge East, Graduate, and College Eight Apartments

August 16-19 Conference opens. Locations: Cowell and Stevenson Colleges, East Field, East Field House, and Classroom Unit Building; some evening events scheduled for Cowell and Stevenson College patios

August 16 Evening: Vendor reception on the Stevenson patio with Roger McGuinn concert at the Cowell patio

August 17 Evening: Banquet dinner at Cowell College patio, followed by entertainment and dance at the East Field

August 18 Evening: Cowell patio and conference closes at 8 p.m.

August 19-20 Conference breakdown at Cowell and Stevenson Colleges. High technology post-conference located in Classroom Unit Building

I know that this conference occupies numerous UCSC facilities and may create confusion about where to park and eat. For some, the noise created by the presence of the conference participants will impact their work environment. However, this event provides many benefits for our campus community, and I hope that you are able to make accommodations in order to minimize the effects of the forum.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Patrick E. Mantey, Dean
