Re: Incident at Stevenson College
On the morning of Friday, April 7, a Stevenson resident threw glass bottles and
yelled at a group of UCSC students and their guests at the Stevenson barbeque area.
Subsequently, University Police arrested the young man. He now is facing both criminal
charges and UCSC administrative disciplinary action.
The verbal abuse and throwing of bottles were shocking and abhorrent actions, completely
unacceptable under any circumstances. Among the group subjected to this violence
were prospective students and their parents, a fact that makes the incident especially
disturbing.
I want to thank the members of Stevenson College, who handled the situation in the
best way they could, given the unfortunate circumstances. I also want to apologize
on behalf of the campus to all of those students and their guests who were involved
in this incident. Please be assured that UC Santa Cruz as a whole--and I personally--value
civil discourse and harmony, and we vigorously condemn the kind of behavior that
has been described.
Incivility, let alone apparently criminal behavior, will not be tolerated at UC Santa
Cruz. We are a community of scholars, living and learning together. Certainly, we
cannot expect to always agree with each other on every matter. Yet, we must unfailingly
demonstrate respect, tolerance and patience in our communications.
A requisite for the privilege of membership in UCSC's community is responsible behavior
toward other members. Only with that commitment can we be free to pursue our goals
of teaching, research and service.
