Re: Death of graduate student

With sadness, I write to inform you of the death of Mark Mitchell, a graduate student in bioinformatics. He died unexpectedly on Sunday, September 3, at the age of 43.

Mark was a valued member of the bioinformatics research group led by David Haussler, professor of biomolecular engineering. He held a B.S. in electrical engineering from UC Berkeley and had worked in industry for more than a decade before returning to school. He earned a B.S. in computer science and mathematics at San Jose State University before beginning graduate studies at UCSC in 2005 with support from a National Institutes of Health fellowship.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 10, at 4 p.m. at Bridges Community Church, 505 Driscoll Road, in Fremont.

Please join me in wishing sincere condolences to Mark's family and many friends.
