Re: Mandatory Sexual Harassment Training - New California Law
California law (Assembly Bill 1825) now requires that all personnel who supervise others complete two hours of sexual harassment training by December 31, 2005. The new law requires this training for "any individual with authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline other employees and individuals with responsibility to direct employees or to adjust their grievances, or effectively to recommend that action." This definition includes staff members, faculty, PI's, co-PI's, lecturers, and researchers who supervise staff, student(s), or academic employees such as teaching assistants, researchers, course assistants, or tutors,
If you have taken sexual harassment training between January 1, 2003, and today, you have met the law's requirement for 2005. If you have not received this training within the last two years, you are required to complete the online training program offered through the UCSC Title IX office by December 31, 2005. If you are unsure whether you are required to complete the training at this time, you may call or email the Title IX office at (831) 459-2462 or rew@ucsc.edu to confirm your status.
The Title IX/Sexual Harassment Office has updated its online training program to meet the new state requirements. If you need to complete the training, you can access the program at: http://www2.ucsc.edu/title9-sh/ -- click on the "updated online training" box or the "online training" option in the menu across the top of the homepage.
It is extremely important that all personnel who are required to complete the training do so by the December 31 deadline. Further information about the new law and the training requirement can be found at: http://www.paulplevin.com/article_sexharassment.html
