Administrative Message November 7, 2005 To: Campus Community From: Gina Dent, Chair, Committee on Affirmative Action and Diversity Re: Affirmative Action and Diversity StudyThe Committee on Affirmative Action and Diversity of the Academic Senate [CAAD], with the support of the Office of the Chancellor, is pleased to announce a comprehensive study of the diversity climate at UCSC to be completed in winter 2006. This study seeks to tell the story of how all segments of our community understand and practice diversity through the daily interactions of campus life. It is a multiphase project that requires your participation in three significant aspects for success. During the month of November, CAAD will present data and materials for discussion in five public forums. The forums are designed to open a space for honest exchange about the strengths and weaknesses of current practices and to gather information about everyday efforts to sustain our community that should be documented. Questions that will guide our discussions include: * How meaningful is the term "diversity" to you and to the people you know? Please join us for a forum in any of the following venues: Monday, November 7, 6-8:30 p.m., Guzman Room at Oakes College These November discussion forums will be recorded and transcribed. In the project's second phase, at the start of winter quarter, CAAD will launch a web-based survey questionnaire, requiring much greater campus participation. Please watch for this announcement. We encourage every member of the community to complete the survey and to advertise it broadly to friends and colleagues. The transcripts from this fall will become, along with the survey results, part of the record that informs the report of findings on diversity at UCSC. As a third element, CAAD will review any relevant materials voluntarily forwarded to the committee by mid-winter quarter for consideration in the final report. Please see the CAAD web site at http://senate.ucsc.edu/caad/ for the more detailed study plan and other information. CAAD hopes to produce a study that will assist the campus in making positive change. I encourage each of you to attend a forum, complete our survey, and submit materials for consideration in the final report. We thank you in advance for your vital participation.
