Administrative MessageJune 26, 2006 To: UC Santa Cruz Community From: UC President Robert C. Dynes Re: UC President Dynes writes to UCSC about Chancellor DentonDear Friends: This past weekend brought a horrible shock to all of us as we learned of the tragic death of Chancellor Denice Denton. I know this is an extremely difficult time for many people in the UC Santa Cruz family, and I want you to know that all of us in the broader University of California community are thinking of you, are sharing in the grief over this terrible loss, and are standing by to assist in any way we can. Denice was a person of great accomplishment and great promise. I asked her to come to UC Santa Cruz in admiration of her many achievements and in firm belief that she would provide dedicated and innovative leadership to help this remarkable campus achieve even more remarkable things in the future. I am heartsick that we have lost her. Our thoughts first and foremost have been with Denice's loved ones, with whom we have been in close touch over the weekend. The University will be offering personal support in the coming days to many of the colleagues who were closest to Denice. My office also is working with the campus on appropriate ways for the campus community and the broader UC family to recognize Chancellor Denton in the coming days. More information will be shared as it becomes available. I want to thank Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David Kliger and the rest of Chancellor Denton's team for continuing to provide steady leadership for the campus at a very difficult moment. I know you will give Dave and his colleagues the support they need, as will I. In the coming days we will move to the formalities of appointing an acting chancellor for the campus, but I believe now is most importantly a time to remember with joy the many successes of Denice's life, and to support each other in mourning her tragic departure. Sincerely,
