Administrative Message February 16, 2006 To: Campus Community From: Chancellor Denice D. Denton Re: Invitation to 22nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial ConvocationI am pleased to invite all campus and community members to attend the 22nd Martin Luther King, Jr., Convocation on Tuesday, February 28, at 7:00 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 307 Church Street, Santa Cruz. Bringing together students, staff, faculty, and members of our wider community, the annual event celebrates the life and dream of the late civil rights leader by reaffirming the human ideals of freedom, justice, community, and opportunity. Featured speakers are Keith Beauchamp, the filmmaker drawing acclaim for The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till, and Angela Glover Blackwell, founder and CEO of the national advocacy group PolicyLink and coauthor of Searching for the Uncommon Common Ground: New Dimensions on Race in America. The UC Santa Cruz student performance group Rainbow Theater will share the stage along with master of ceremonies UC Santa Cruz Professor Manuel Pastor. The event is free of charge and open to the public: no advance ticketing is required. Campus shuttles from UC Santa Cruz to the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium will depart at 6:15, 6:25, and 6:30 p.m. from major campus Metro stops. In addition to the evening convocation event, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Convocation Committee is sponsoring two free screenings of convocation keynote speaker Keith Beauchamp's award-winning film The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till. The first is at 7:00 p.m., on Monday, February 27, at UCSC's Media Theater; the second is on Tuesday, February 28, at 12 noon at the Del Mar Theater, 1124 Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz. Mr. Beauchamp will be on hand to introduce his film and conduct a question-and-answer session at each screening. Although both screenings are free and open to the public, tickets will be issued in advance and held at the door. To reserve tickets, visit the following web site: http://bas.ucsc.edu/events/ or contact the Special Events Office: 9-5003 or specialevents@ucsc.edu. I hope you will join your colleagues and our community for these inspiring events in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
