Re: Passing of student Jessica Roy

It is with sadness that I write to inform you of the death this past weekend of one of our graduate students, Jessica Roy. Jessica, who was struck by a car while in Kenya conducting dissertation research for her doctorate in sociology, passed away on August 27. She was 28.

Jessica's research was aimed at improving the health and livelihood of Kenyan families through better access to clean water.

Our Sociology Department is planning to host a memorial to commemorate this special student's life and work; details will be announced soon.

Jessica's hometown newspaper in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, published the following obituary earlier this week: http://www.seacoastonline.com/news/08312004/obituari/35078.htm

Please join me in expressing condolences to Jessica's parents, Stephen and Peg Roy; to other family members; and to her many friends at UCSC and elsewhere.
