Administrative Message June 8, 2005 To: Campus Community From: Interim Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David S. Kliger Re: Vice Provost of Academic AffairsProfessor George Brown, Vice Provost of Academic Affairs (VPAA) at UC Santa Cruz, has announced his resignation from this position effective June 30, 2005. Professor Brown will return to his position as Professor of Physics effective July 1, 2005, and be on sabbatical for the coming academic year. During his tenure as Vice Provost, Professor Brown was responsible for department and program external reviews, and he led a major reform of the review process. The reorganized review structure constituted one of the three foundations of the Educational Effectiveness report prepared for WASC (the Western Association of Schools and Colleges) as part of UCSC's reaccreditation, and was strongly endorsed by the WASC accreditation committee. George also reformed the program approval process, and successfully shepherded four new doctoral programs, four new master's programs, six new bachelor's programs, and two colleges (the first since 1974!) through campus and systemwide agencies. Two of the graduate programs - Bioinformatics, and Digital Arts and New Media - are fully interdisciplinary. In addition, three new doctoral programs are now undergoing either campus or systemwide review, and two completed interdisciplinary doctoral proposals are awaiting decanal approval. He developed a template governance structure tailored to interdisciplinary programs, serving as a model for recently approved and pending programs. George was also responsible for the oversight of the UCSC Arboretum and for the UC MBEST Center. Last fall he initiated a master planning process for the south campus area encompassing the Arboretum, the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems, the Campus Natural Reserve, and the Historic District. He also chaired several task forces, including the Growth and Stewardship Task Force, and the Task Force on UCSC Extension, whose report is due out this month. We thank George for his service as VPAA, and we wish him the best of success in his research and teaching as he returns to the UCSC Physics Department. It is with great appreciation that I am also able to announce that Professor Alison Galloway will be recommended for the position of Interim VPAA effective August 1, 2005. A distinguished Professor of Anthropology, Professor Galloway brings to the Office of Campus Provost and EVC an exceptional scholarly record and extensive administrative experience. Professor Alison Galloway received her Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1988 from the University of Arizona. She began her career at UCSC in 1990 and was promoted to Professor in 2001. Professor Galloway has served in a number of important positions within her department, the division, as well as in the Academic Senate, and qualified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology in 1992. After serving on a number of Senate committees, including the Committee on Teaching, the Committee on Faculty Welfare, and the Committee on Planning and Budget, Alison served as Vice Chair during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 academic years, and most recently has served as Chair of the Academic Senate since 2003-04. UC Santa Cruz is fortunate that someone of Professor Galloway's experience and expertise is willing to assume the position of Interim Vice Provost of Academic Affairs, and I thank her for her commitment to the campus.
