Administrative Message April 27, 2005 To: UC Santa Cruz Campus Community From: Denice D. Denton, Chancellor; David S. Kliger, Interim Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Re: Tent University -- message from Chancellor Denton and Campus Provost KligerWe regret the arrest and physical removal of students from the Tent University site last Monday evening. As we've indicated before, every possible effort was made in the week prior to offer the organizers an alternative safe location for their event. We are grateful to all of the students, staff, and faculty who contributed to the positive activities of Tent University for the remainder of the week. Yesterday, Alison Galloway, Chair of the Academic Senate, sent the message copied below to the UCSC faculty. We are pleased to see that the Academic Senate is planning to organize a panel that will work to understand the events concerning Tent University and how the campus can most effectively respond to incidents like this in the future. As Chair Galloway said in her message, we wholeheartedly endorse this approach. It is clear that there are lessons to learn from all perspectives, and we are confident that taking advantage of this teachable moment through open and thoughtful dialogue will serve our campus's best interests. __________ Dear Colleagues: This letter has two purposes. First, I would like to thank the many faculty who have written to me and other colleagues on the Senate Executive Committee to express thoughts and feelings about Tent University and about the circumstances surrounding it. The thoughtful involvement of so many faculty in the events of the last week is much appreciated. Second, I would like to assure you that I will ask the Senate Executive Committee to form a panel for the purpose of understanding the events concerning Tent University and developing better strategies for any such events in the future. I have had a preliminary discussion with Chancellor Denton and with Interim EVC Kliger and they support our initiative. Indeed, they would like to partner with the rest of the UC community to assure the long-term success of an independent panel. Many of us are convinced that there are lessons to be learned, and we would like to take the time to learn them. The exact contours of the panel are still unclear but must be broadly representative of the campus community. Its agenda cannot be dictated by any single perspective. Therefore, it seems clear to me that the panel ought to include representation from undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and the administration as well as from the faculty. I will keep you posted. Thanks again for your patience and input. Alison Galloway, Ph.D., D.-A.B.F.A. 831-459-3360 (office)
