Re: From Chancellor Designate Denton

Dear Colleagues:

As your incoming chancellor, my top priority is to support our creative and rigorous academic enterprise, and I aim to expand national and international appreciation for the relevance of your work across the range of disciplines. I am dedicated to increasing support for our campus that will enable us to enhance our excellence and to address as much as possible the unique challenges of the UCSC campus.

Before expanding on my initial goals, I want to speak to the discussion stemming from news reports about the UC Regents' appointment of my partner Gretchen Kalonji. Any consideration of new professional opportunities by one partner in a two-career family must take into account the professional needs and aspirations of the other. When I was offered the position as UC Santa Cruz Chancellor, President Dynes and I agreed that, among my needs, was an appropriate opportunity for my partner. The position, the process, and a brief biography of Dr. Kalonji is available at http://universityofcalifornia.edu/news/factsheets/kalonji.pdf. UCOP's action in this regard, using UCOP resources, is customary practice for presidential and chancellorial hires at universities around the country. Partner hire needs are an important feature of contemporary work culture, and I look forward to learning about the partner hire situation on this campus.

As I prepare to join UC Santa Cruz on February 14, I want to share a few thoughts about my eagerness to begin working with you. I am excited to support efforts that build on your achievements and take our campus's research, teaching, and service to even greater distinction.

Among the ways I will approach this is to build on activities arising from UCSC's collaborative culture, including many examples of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary work. Another area of focus will be the further development and expansion of graduate education. Not only will this support an ambitious research agenda, but it will provide opportunities to enhance the campus's existing strengths in undergraduate education. Furthermore, I am interested in learning more about the myriad ways that UCSC's scholars are making positive change and influencing progress across the range of disciplines.

In the coming months, I am committed to listening and learning more about UC Santa Cruz. I will seek your opinions and welcome your ideas. To assist me in engaging fully with both campus members and our friends and partners, I have asked a representative group of students, staff, and faculty to serve on a transition team. This ad hoc group is advising me on the most effective ways to spend my time, so that I can get to know your ambitions and challenges. That background will form a firm foundation on which we will build our future together.

As I said to the Regents upon my appointment in December and again the next day when I visited the campus, I am especially pleased to be joining a university that values, celebrates and inspires diversity. I look forward to advancing this tradition, as well as supporting the campus's other goals and ideals.

Cordially yours,

Denice D. Denton
Chancellor Designate
