Re: Death of two UCSC people

It is with great sadness that I write about the death over the winter break of two UCSC people: longtime staff member (and alumnus) Gary Love and student Ian Carney.

Gary died in his Santa Cruz home on Christmas day of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was 60. Gary worked in custodial services for more than 20 years, and was also a member of the pioneer class of students who enrolled on campus during UCSC's first year, in 1965. His survivors include his wife, Mary Wells, also a longtime UCSC staff member. A memorial service will take place this Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Seymour Center.

Ian, a third-year UCSC student, died on December 20 in a climbing accident near Lake Tahoe; he was 20. Ian was majoring in art history and was interested in becoming an architect. An accomplished athlete and outdoorsman, he swam for the UCSC swim team and was an avid cyclist and triathlete. His sister, Monica, is a 2004 graduate of UCSC.

More information about these remarkable people can be found on the following Currents Online web page: http://currents.ucsc.edu/04-05/01-03/inmemoriam.asp

Please join me in expressing our deepest condolences to Gary's and Ian's families, and to their many friends at UCSC and elsewhere.
