December 14, 2003 To: Campus Community From: M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor Re: Child's death: message from ChancellorDear Colleagues, Xiomara Tocalino, a four-year-old resident of Family Student Housing, died on Saturday in San Jose. Her 27-year-old mother and UC Santa Cruz student, Yesenia Quevedo has been arrested in connection with the death. At this moment, we do not know all the facts of the case, and the San Jose Police Department's investigation continues. This shocking and tragic event affects us all, whether or not we knew the family. On Sunday, staff at Family Student Housing (FSH) organized grief counseling and other support services for FSH residents. On Monday, Counseling and Psychological Services staff will be available both at FSH and at the Granary, where the child was a student. Any campus member is welcome to take advantage of these services. Please join me in extending sincere condolences to the family, friends and others, who mourn the loss of Xiomara. Sincerely,
