Re: John Simpson: Chancellor's message

Dear Colleagues:

With a mixture of sadness and pride, I announce that John B. Simpson has accepted an offer to become the 14th president of the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York. His appointment is expected to be formalized by the SUNY Board of Regents at its meeting later this month. John will be the first EVC/Campus Provost in the history of UC Santa Cruz to become president of an AAU university, and it is a source of pride to us all that one of our own is making such a significant career advancement.

Still, we will miss the leadership and innovation that has characterized John's tenure here. Among his many accomplishments, he has stimulated active and productive planning efforts, and in the last year has fostered the establishment of a strategic way to address budget cuts through the Executive Budget Committee process. He has supported the creation of 43 new academic majors, minors and concentrations and the hiring of nearly 150 ladder-rank faculty, enhancing both the scope and quality of our teaching and research missions. John's engagement in shared governance with the Academic Senate has resulted in improved communications and stronger working relationships.

To continue and build on these achievements, I will confer with various campus leaders and then appoint an interim Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor. John plans to step down from his current responsibilities on or about December 15, and I expect to announce our interim appointment well in advance of his departure.

In the meantime, please join me in thanking John Simpson for his outstanding service to UC Santa Cruz for the past five years. He leaves his post with many significant improvements in place -- and I'm sure we all wish him continued success.

M.R.C. Greenwood
Chancellor
