January 23, 2004 To: Campus Community From: Martin M. Chemers, Interim Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Re: Sandra Chung, Professor of Linguistics, has joined the Office of the Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor as Faculty AssistantI am pleased to announce that Sandra Chung, Professor of Linguistics, has joined the Office of the Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor as Faculty Assistant. This part-time appointment has been created to assist the Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor with academic personnel reviews. Creation of such a position was recommended in a recent external study of the campus organization to allow the Campus Provost/EVC to devote more time to campus planning and other areas. Professor Chung received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. She is a widely published and world-renowned scholar in the areas of Syntactic theory and Austronesian linguistics. Since joining UCSC in 1987, Professor Chung has been steadily involved in University service, including service as a member of the Committee on Privilege and Tenure; Director of the Linguistics Research Center; Chair of the Linguistics Department, Chair of the Philosophy Department; member of the Charges Committee; Chair and member of the Committee on Academic Personnel; and member of the UC Merced Committee on Academic Personnel. In all of these roles she has developed a reputation for upholding high standards of rigor and fairness. Chancellor Greenwood and I are delighted that Professor Chung has accepted this important administrative position and we look forward to working with her. Sincerely, Martin M. Chemers
