Re: Potential strike: message from John Simpson

TO THE UC SANTA CRUZ COMMUNITY:

I am writing to you about a potential strike on our campus in the very near future and my expectations for the continuation of critical functions during a strike.

Unions representing our non-senate faculty and some of our staff have announced strike activities for October 14 and 15. In the event of such actions, we must remember our responsibilities as a public university, and take steps to ensure that the teaching and research missions of the campus continue to be carried out.

If a strike occurs, we may experience some inconveniences, such as reduced bus service and delayed deliveries. However, all faculty and staff are expected to come to work and to meet their obligations. Offices will be kept open, classes will be taught, and the campus will provide normal or equivalent services.

While I understand that strongly held views exist around the current collective bargaining issues giving rise to this potential work stoppage, I ask that you honor your commitment to our academic and research missions and to our students as the parties work toward agreement. I am hopeful that the University and the unions involved in these strike actions will soon reach agreement on the issues outstanding between them. Information about the various negotiations between the University and its employees' unions can be found at http://www.ucop.edu/humres/labor.

The economic environment of the state within which the present labor negotiations are taking place creates a climate of budgetary uncertainty for the University that will challenge the campus on many fronts. I appreciate the effects this may have on a professional and personal level for each of us. As we address these challenges, I ask that we all be mindful of the UCSC Principles of Community (http://www.ucsc.edu/administration/principles_community.html).

Respectfully yours,

John B. Simpson
Campus Provost and
Executive Vice Chancellor
