Re: Professor Talamantes will retire from position of vice provost and dean

Professor Frank J. Talamantes will retire from his position as Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies as of June 30. Frank has agreed to remain on as acting dean through the 2003-2004 academic year until a successor is identified.

After a long and highly successful career as professor of biological sciences, Frank served as dean and vice provost since July 2000. During this time, he has overseen considerable growth and change in UCSC's graduate programs at a pivotal time in our history. He was critical in the campus's decision to adopt the goal of increasing its graduate enrollments to 15% of total students, and he has overseen much of the necessary infrastructure changes that will be important in realizing this goal.

I and the campus are very grateful to Frank for his hard and diligent work toward the goal of excellence in graduate programs at UC Santa Cruz. Please join me in thanking him for his efforts.

Sincerely,

John B. Simpson
Campus Provost and
Executive Vice Chancellor
