Re: Major Change for Banana Slug Spring Fair

After a year of review and evaluation of the University's admissions yield activities for the last several fall incoming classes, the Office of Admissions and a cross section of the campus community has developed and implemented our outreach calendar to recruit for the Fall 2003 class. We would like to take this opportunity to let you know of the one most notable change, which affects the Banana Slug Spring Fair (BSSF).

BSSF, which will take place on April 12, will focus only on alumni reunions this year (listed below). We make this adjustment due to several factors. First is the escalating cost of the day. Second is the status of construction on the west side of campus, and our belief that through expanded spring tours, we can give prospective student visitors a better sense of the campus in groups of 31 than we can on a day that draws crowds of 9,000 - 10,000 visitors.

To give our admitted students a better sense of the academic quality of life here at UC Santa Cruz, we have also undertaken this year to rewrite all of our outreach material, and as of February 15, over 100 new Admissions web-pages will be released.

As we prepare for more than 17,000 admissions offers to be released on March 1, we would like to take this opportunity to ask the campus to be conscious of our Admissions Tour Groups and prospective student visitors, as they make that difficult decision of where to enroll next fall. Please offer whatever assistance you can to these important campus visitors.

BSSF still offers the campus a valuable opportunity to cultivate alumni donors and and friends and raise the visibility of participating campus units. April 12 events being planned include:
-- All-Alumni Reunion Luncheon
-- Thirty-year Reunion of the Class of '73
-- Fifteen-year reunion of the Class of '88
-- College provost receptions
-- College Eight 30th Anniversary Reunion
-- The BSSF Distinguished Faculty Lecture presented by Adrienne Zihlman
-- Page and Eloise Smith Scholastic Society meeting
-- The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center Lavender Reception
-- Campus Tours
-- and other events under discussion: School of Engineering Alumni Reunion, Journalism Alumni Reunion.

If your unit would like to put on an event for alumni during BSSF, we encourage you to contact Lynn Zachreson at the Alumni Association, Ext. 9-2530, to make plans as soon as possible.

Thank you for your continued support of campus outreach to prospective students, alumni, and other campus friends.
