January 22, 2003 To: Campus Community From: M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor Re: Message from Chancellor: Violence in San JoseDear Colleagues: You may have already heard news reports of violence between San Jose State University students affiliated with two fraternities. There are news reports that UC Santa Cruz students might have been involved in the altercation, but at this time, San Jose police have not provided the campus with official confirmation of that. The incident occurred around midnight last night in San Jose. One student died of injuries and others were hospitalized, but expected to recover. We believe that none of these victims are affiliated with UC Santa Cruz. The incident is under investigation by the San Jose City Police Department, and we expect to hear details as they become available. Clearly, this is a tragic situation, one that deeply saddens all of us who are dedicated to education and the success of promising young people. Whether our students had a substantive role -- or any role -- I want to emphasize that such violent behavior is completely intolerable. Should our own investigations discover that any of our students were engaged in illegal activity or have violated campus policies, we will implement the student judiciary process and determine appropriate consequences. I am very proud of the outstanding service record of our students, and of the reputation for the positive work in which our student organizations engage. We will continue to work within our organization and with colleagues at other campuses to ensure a safe and productive learning environment for all.
