Re: Campus Closure

NOTE: ACTION REQUESTED OF UNIT HEADS

To: THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY
Re: Campus Closure, December 22, 2001 - January 1, 2002

Since 1991, the UCSC campus has been closed during the holiday season in an effort to conserve energy during a period when University business is generally slow. This year the campus will be closed during the period of December 22, 2001 (Saturday) through January 1, 2002 (Tuesday). The campus community is reminded to turn off lights, shut down computers and other office equipment, and close exterior windows before leaving for the break.

As with previous years, some housing areas and other buildings will remain open. Laboratory buildings will be partially operational due to the special needs of researchers and scientists, and some campus units' work schedules may require staffing during all or part of the closure. Fire, police, and environmental health and safety services will be provided to the campus community during this period, along with necessary utilities and other essential services.

However, the process for exception to the closure is slightly modified this year. Once unit heads have concurrence from their Principal Officer, they are asked to notify Physical Plant directly of their plans to remain open or staffed during part or all of the closure. Notification can be made via email to dbarry@cats.ucsc.edu, by campus mail to Donna Barry, Physical Plant @Barn G, or by fax (ext. 9-5121) no later than Friday, December 14, 2001. This will ensure that the open areas will receive heat and other necessary services during this period when most faculty, staff, and students are on vacation. Unit heads should also notify their appropriate service centers for time and payroll accounting purposes. Finally, faculty are asked to announce the closure broadly to their graduate students who may plan on working throughout the closure.

If you have questions or would like further information on the campus closure, please call Physical Plant at ext. 9-3447 for facilities-related matters. Please contact your service center human resources coordinator for human resources policy issues.

Sincerely,
Ilse Kolbus
Acting Director, Physical Plant
