Re: George Brown assumes position of vice provost for Academic Affairs
Dear Colleagues:
I am writing to advise you of a transition in staffing in the Office of the Campus
Provost. Effective August 1, Professor George Brown will assume the position of Vice
Provost for Academic Affairs (VPAA).
Professor Faye Crosby, who has served with distinction as the initial appointee in
this position, has informed me of her decision that she will better apply her personal
interests and skills by returning to her responsibilities as a faculty member in
the Department of Psychology. Dr. Crosby brought considerable enthusiasm and energy
to the position of VPAA, and I invite you to join me in thanking her for the contributions
she made during her service as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and in wishing her
continued success in her teaching and research.
The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs is a new position created earlier this year
from the position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Planning and Programs. The VPAA
is responsible for institutional oversight for academic program development, implementation,
and review, a responsibility that is assuming increased importance as the campus
grows and our ability to launch new programs increases. Dr. Brown has agreed to serve
for the next year in an interim capacity as the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.
He brings to the position extensive institutional knowledge derived from his experience
as the chair of the Department of Physics and of the Academic Senate Committee on
Education Policy. This background provides him with an excellent perspective on the
issues and priorities of the campus, as well
as an understanding of the administrative responsibilities for program planning and
implementation that reside with the VPAA.
Prior to joining the faculty at UC Santa Cruz in 1990, Dr. Brown was a faculty member
at Stanford University, where he held an appointment as the Associate Director of
the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory. While in that position, he helped
develop some of the most powerful X-ray sources and techniques currently in practice.
I am delighted to have Dr. Brown join the senior academic administrative group, and
I am confident that the campus will be well served by this appointment. Please join
me in welcoming him to his new position.
Sincerely yours,
John Simpson
Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
