Re: George Brown appointed Vice Provost for Academic Affairs
Dear Colleagues:
I am very pleased to announce that Professor George Brown has accepted the position
of Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (VPAA), for a five-year term to begin immediately.
Professor Brown emerged as the top candidate from a campuswide search initiated
late last year. He brings to the position extensive institutional knowledge derived
from his experience as the chair of the Department of Physics and of the Academic
Senate Committee on Education Policy. Most recently, he also served as the Interim
VPAA. This background provides him with an excellent perspective on the issues and
priorities of the campus, as well as an understanding of VPAA's administrative responsibilities
for program planning, review, and implementation.
The role of the VPAA in campus planning is particularly important in this period
of growth. Both as VPAA and as chair of the campus Academic Planning Committee, Vice
Provost Brown will participate in planning of traditional and nontraditional programmatic
strategies that will accommodate student enrollment increases. In this regard, working
closely with the deans, Vice Provost Brown will lead the campus planning process
to identify and develop cross-disciplinary and professional programs that may fall
outside the typical interests of the academic divisions. Included will be consideration
of two specific proposals, the Silicon Valley Center and year-round operations.
Conducted in close coordination with current, ongoing divisional planning, this planning
will advance the stature of the campus as a first-rank research and teaching institution,
as well as address the challenges and opportunities of "Tidal Wave II."
The Chancellor and I are delighted to have Professor Brown join the senior academic
administrative group. His appointment is an excellent outcome for the campus at
a time when coordinated and comprehensive academic planning is particularly important.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Brown to his new position.
Sincerely,
John B. Simpson
Campus Provost
and Executive Vice Chancellor
