Re: UPTE strike
The University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees
(UPTE-CWA) have been negotiating since June 2000 on a successor contract. Although
the University has continued to bargain in good faith and believes that there are
very few remaining outstanding issues, the Santa Cruz chapter of UPTE-CWA Local 9119
has called for a strike by its membership on Friday, April 20, and Saturday, April
21, 2001. The University believes that the called for strike action is not lawful.
All on-campus and off-campus offices will remain open, as scheduled, to ensure that
this action by some members of our campus community will not prevent others from
conducting business as usual. TAPS will operate all available campus transit vehicles
to accommodate the anticipated demand for shuttle services should the Santa Cruz
Metro (SCMTD) buses refuse to travel onto campus. It is likely that all Route 1,
12 and 91 buses will load and unload passengers at transit stops adjacent to the
Main Entrance on Bay and High Streets, and passengers will walk onto the campus to
board Day Shuttles
While we will experience some inconveniences we have a responsibility to students,
their parents, and to the citizens who support this institution to sustain our institutional
and instructional missions. As in the past, all employees are expected to meet their
normal obligations to the University.
.
Please direct any questions about strike activities to the campus Labor Relations
Office.
