Re: Appointment of Interim Director for UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Center

As has been discussed widely over the past two years, UC Santa Cruz is exploring the expansion of our service in the Silicon Valley region. To further this effort, last spring I charged an academic planning task force to develop guiding principles for establishment of the Silicon Valley Center. Chaired by Professors Bill Ladusaw and Gary Glatzmaier, the task force emphasized the necessity of effective and energetic academic leadership to ensure the success of the Center.

To that end, I am very pleased to announce that I have appointed Professor R. Michael Tanner as the Interim Director of the UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Center. This appointment is effective immediately, for a one-year term.

The Interim Director will serve as the chief executive officer for the Center and will report directly to the Campus Provost. He will have oversight, responsibility, and authority for all aspects of Center planning. This will include academic program planning, expanding on the recommendations of the Ladusaw-Glatzmaier Task Force, capital planning, coordination with NASA and other higher education collaborators, coordination with the University of California Office of the President and with the other University campuses, and the overall organization and operations of the Center. These efforts will be supported by $1.1 million allocated in the 2000-01 state budget expressly for this purpose.

Professor Tanner brings an ideal combination of academic distinction and administrative experience to this position. A professor of computer science, he is a noted authority in the area of codes on graphs. In March 2000, he was named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), one of the Institute's most prestigious honors. His administrative service has included serving as Chairman of Computer Science Department from 1981 to 1988 and as Dean of the Natural Sciences Division from 1988 to 1989. As Academic Vice Chancellor and Executive Vice Chancellor from 1989 to 1998, he helped guide the campus through nearly a decade of significant campus history. His knowledge of UC Santa Cruz, his appreciation for the academic strengths and potential of our programs, and his familiarity with the Silicon Valley milieu all support his new role.

The development of the UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Center provides exciting opportunities for this campus, for the University of California, and for the students, research partners, and others who will benefit. Please join me and Chancellor Greenwood as we congratulate Professor R. Michael Tanner and welcome him to this important position.
