August 2, 2000 TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY: I am pleased to announce the appointment of Alfreda L. Mitre as Director of the new Native American Student Life Resource Center effective September 5, 2000! Alfreda is no stranger to the UCSC campus. As many of you may know, she was an EOP Academic Advisor during the 1999 academic year. In her position in EOP she assisted with student programming while establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship with students of color, faculty and staff. Alfreda is an enrolled member of the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe located in Las Vegas, Nevada. Currently, she is a board member of the Harvard University, Honoring Nations Project, an awards program that identifies, celebrates, and shares outstanding examples of tribal governance throughout the United States. Having served as Tribal Chairperson of her tribe and Director of Native American Programs at UC Riverside, she has many years of experience working on behalf of Native American issues and student affairs. Alfreda is delighted about being back on campus. In addition, she looks forward to the challenge of building a Center that will foster pride and confidence in the ability of Native American students to make positive and educational contributions to the University community.
