Re: Stage three emergency alert update
Earlier today, I notified you that the California ISO (Independent System Operator)
had issued a STAGE THREE EMERGENCY ALERT for the state. The purpose of this message
is to update you on today's power crisis.
As of 3 p.m. today, the ISO was anticipating that the state may be short as much
as 1,500 MegaWatts of electricity during the hours of 5 to 8 tonight. That means
that approximately 1.5 million residential and commercial customers statewide may
be part of a circuit that experiences a blackout for a period of time tonight. Such
a blackout, if it occurs, is not expected to last longer than approximately one hour,
according to the ISO.
At this time, the campus is not expecting to be subject to one of the blackouts,
but PG&E has indicated that a final call about the affected areas will be determined
by supply and consumption at any given moment. Therefore, it is very important that
the campus continue to reduce its consumption of electricity throughout the evening.
According to the ISO, the Stage 3 alert will remain in effect until 10 o'clock tonight.
