Re: Larry Merkley named as consultant for campus information technology

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that the campus has engaged the professional services of Mr. Larry Merkley as a consultant to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor regarding campus Information Technology beginning August 21, 2000.

Mr. Merkley is well known already to many individuals on campus for consulting work he has previously completed  regarding IT and general management issues. Larry will be advising me and other senior-level management regarding the creation and implementation of a campus vision for IT; coordination of strategic planning and communication among all IT units within a decentralized computing environment; and IT resource allocation, acquisition and budget to ensure the effective and strategic deployment and use of IT resources.

The services that Mr. Merkley will provide are of great value to UC Santa Cruz. Virtually every individual on our campus, whether faculty, students, or staff, depends on technology for significant parts of his or her work. All indications suggest this is to be a trend that will continue, indeed accelerate, impacting the business of the University in ways we can only begin to imagine today. An active, strategically focused and adequately supported technology infrastructure is vital to UCSC's ability to maintain and to expand its international prominence as a research and learning institution.

By way of further introduction, Larry Merkley received his MBA from Brigham Young University in 1969. From 1981 to 2000 Mr. Merkley served on the Faculty of Management at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, where he was an Associate Professor of Information Systems. While at the University of Lethbridge he held a number of positions as a faculty administrator, including Associate Dean of the Faculty of Management, and Associate Vice-President of Administration.

Please join me in welcoming Larry Merkley to UC Santa Cruz.

Sincerely,

John B. Simpson
Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
