Re: Death of staff member Patricia Lara
It is with deep sadness that I inform you that Patricia Lara, who served the campus
community for 18 years in the Financial Aid Office, passed away on Saturday, July
7, after a courageous three-year fight against cancer. She was 53.
Pat held a variety of important jobs during her many years in Financial Aid. Most
recently, Pat worked as an adviser doing what came naturally to her: helping students,
with special financial circumstances, realize their dream of higher education.
Pat's family and staff in the office wish to thank each member of the UCSC community
who so generously donated vacation time so Pat could participate in the Catastrophic
Leave Program.
While a service is being planned for Pat in Los Angles, her work "family"
in Financial Aid has organized a local memorial service for Pat for this Thursday
(July 13). The memorial will take place in two parts:
- 5:45 p.m., Memorial Walk: Friends, family, colleagues who wish to, will gather
at Lighthouse Point for a leisurely walk to Natural Bridges State Park and back (about
1 hour). This was one of Pat's favorite walks.
- 6:45 p.m., Memorial Service: Meet in the grassy area in front of the Surfing
Museum at Lighthouse Point Park
Pat, who was born in Los Angeles, married Frank Lara and the couple moved to San
Jose in 1970. They later moved to Santa Cruz, where they raised a son, Timothy. Before
coming to UCSC in 1982, Pat worked for the Live Oak School District, where she assisted
with the children's horticultural program.
Touring gardens, in fact, was one of Pat's greatest loves. She was a devoted mother
and family member, loved to travel, enjoyed salsa dancing, and was an avid walker,
among many other interests. She also took great pleasure in volunteering for Father
Rene's community activities at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Santa Cruz.
Pat is survived by her son, Timothy Lara of San Francisco, and mother, Nellie Loya
of Downey, California.
Contributions in Patricia Lara's name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Sincerely,
M.R.C. Greenwood
