Re: Labor demonstrations at campus entrances
I am sending this note to comment on the labor demonstrations that have been occurring
at the campus entrances since last week. I want to emphasize that these demonstrations
have nothing to do with construction on the UC Santa Cruz campus.
People holding signs at the entrances to campus are representatives of Carpenter's
Labor Union 405, based in San Jose. They have been distributing what can be characterized
as inaccurate and misleading information in an attempt to implicate UC Santa Cruz
in the union's dispute with a private company, Barry Swenson Builders. Apparently
as a strategy to gain attention for the Union's goal of establishing closed union
shop operations at various construction companies in the region, similar pickets
have been placed recently for several weeks at a time at other community locations.
The facts are that UCSC Extension currently leases space at the University Town Center,
and the building owner is Barry Swenson Company. The building was completed in 1999,
and Extension has leased space there since it was opened. However, Extension is not
involved in, nor is Extension responsible for, the business practices of the building
owner.
The University of California always has, and will continue to comply with all legal
requirements of the Public Work Laws and the California Labor Code. The University
values a productive working relationship with the labor groups with whom it works,
and expects to continue fostering such relationships.
