Re: Professor Frank Talamantes chosen as Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies
Dear Campus Colleagues:
I am very pleased to announce that Professor Frank Talamantes of the Department of
Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology has agreed to accept the position of
Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies for a three-year term to begin August 1,
2000. Dr. Talamantes was identified from an excellent field of nominees and applicants
in a campuswide search conducted over this past year.
Dr. Talamantes brings to this position extensive experience, not only as a faculty
member at UC Santa Cruz, but also through his service to the scientific community
and his longstanding commitment to issues of minority and graduate education, at
both national and local levels .
Dr. Talamantes received his doctorate from UC Berkeley prior to joining the UCSC
faculty in 1974. From his initial appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Biology
Department, Dr. Talamantes rose to the rank of Professor of Biology in 1984. Through
numerous awards and honors he has achieved international levels of distinction in
the scientific community. In addition, he is a past president of the Society for
the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science and currently chairs
a study section at the National Institute of Health responsible for the review of
training grants for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
The Chancellor and I are delighted to have Dr. Talamantes join the senior academic
administrative group. At this time in its history, UC Santa Cruz is uniquely poised
to build graduate programs of distinction. As the campus moves forward to meet the
challenges and responsibilities of the new century, we believe that this appointment
provides an excellent opportunity for the campus.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Talamantes to his new position.
Sincerely yours,
John B. Simpson
Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
