To: Campus Colleagues
From: John B. Simpson, Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor

Chancellor Greenwood and I are very pleased to announce that Dr. Sung-Mo (Steve) Kang, Professor and Department Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne, has accepted the position of Dean of the Jack Baskin School of Engineering. Pending final approval by the UC Regents, the appointment is for a five-year term, beginning January 1, 2001.

As the inaugural dean of the School, Dean Patrick Mantey has provided excellent leadership during its first three years. He will continue as dean until Professor Kang's arrival.

Dr. Kang received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1975. Until 1985 he was with AT&T Bell Laboratories, and also served as a faculty member of Rutgers University. In 1995, he joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he has been Professor and Department Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering, one of the premier programs in the country. His research interests include VLSI design methodologies and optimization for performance, reliability and manufacturability; modeling and simulation of semiconductor devices and circuits; high-speed optoelectronic circuits; and fully optical network systems.

Dr. Kang is Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is a Foreign Member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, and the recipient of numerous national and international awards and honors. A national leader in his profession, he has served as a member of Board of Governors, Secretary and Treasurer, Administrative Vice President, and 1991 President of IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.

The Jack Baskin School of Engineering is poised to grow significantly over the next several years. The Chancellor and I are convinced that Dr. Kang will provide the necessary leadership and vision that will guide this growth in a manner that builds on the accomplishments of Dean Mantey and ensures the continuing development of an engineering school of distinction. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Kang and his family to UC Santa Cruz.
